TAIPEI (Reuters) - A Canadian warship has sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait, the island’s defence ministry said on Saturday, a voyage that comes at a time of heightened military tension between China and Taiwan and which could anger Beijing.

Ja det här är rena krutdurken, men nämns knappt i svenska nyheter. Det aggresiva Kina är mycket nyckfullt och på väg att provocera och göra anspråk på delar av alla sina grannars territorier och starta en allvarlig konflikt.
Jag ser det som den största nuvarande faran för en allvarlig konflikt som sen kan sprida sig globalt.

Fortsätter med ytterligare vapenköp (faktiskt offensiva vapen) av Taiwan för att försöka kunna freda sin demokratiska nation mot PRC-kinas hot om invasion. De närmaste veckorna är mycket kritiska!

NEW YORK -- The White House's approval last week of advanced arms sales to Taiwan is a sign that the U.S. is putting muscle behind its vocal support for the island's defense against Chinese aggression.

The sales include SLAM-ER air-to-ground missiles, drones and a coastal defense missile system. According to analysts, the equipment will immediately boost Taiwan's capability to counter several Chinese attack scenarios. Reuters cited an unidentified official saying the sales are valued at around $5 billion.

The arms sales, however, send their own message. The Boeing-made long-range SLAM-ER air-to-ground missiles could be used in a counterstrike directed at Chinese mainland targets, or, theoretically, even in a first strike.

"It's not a defensive weapon," said Dennis Weng, an assistant professor of political science at Sam Houston State University who has researched Taiwan's military capability. "The U.S. is trying to send a stronger signal."

China has threatened retaliation if the United States completes its multi-billion weapons deal with Taiwan, according to Fox Business.

The Chinese Cabinet’s Taiwan Affairs Office issued a statement that insisted Tsai’s Democratic Progressive’s Party stop its ''plotting'' with the United States to ''refuse unification through arms.''

The statement didn't elaborate on what the consequences would be for carrying on with the deal, but the announcement is the latest display of erosion in diplomacy between China and the United States.


It said Taiwan should cut off the deal to ''avoid serious repercussions for relations between China and the U.S. and their armed forces and peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.''

On Wednesday, the State Department announced it had agreed to sell 135 precision land-attack missiles and other equipment to Taiwan to beef up its defense against a possible Chinese attack.

"China will sanction several U.S. defense contractors after the State Department approved a $1.8 billion arms sale to Taiwan.

Zhao Lijian, a foreign ministry spokesman, said on Monday that Beijing will institute sanctions against Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Raytheon — as well as "relevant American individuals" associated with the sales.

“In order to safeguard national interests, China decided to impose sanctions on the American companies that were involved in arms sales to Taiwan,” Zhao said, according to the Associated Press. He did not indicate what the sanctions might entail or when they would go into effect.

The Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress last week that the State Department approved the possible sale of 135 Standoff Land Attack Missile Expanded Response missiles worth more than $1 billion, 11 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems M142 launchers for roughly $436 million, and six MS-110 reconnaissance pods for about $367 million dollars."

China considers democratically-ruled Taiwan its own territory with no right to formal ties with other countries, and has watched with growing alarm stepped up U.S. support for the island, including new arms sales and visits to Taipei by senior U.S. officials.

Speaking at a daily news briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said they opposed any official exchanges between Washington and Taipei.

China’s most advanced hypersonic missile, the DF-17, is reported by the South China Morning Post to be deployed along the Southeastern coastline of China in what could be a signal or preparation for an attempt to reunite with Taiwan by force.

Interestingly, a report in the Chinese-government backed Global Times says the hypersonic weapon would be intended to thwart “foreign intruders” seeking to intervene and stop a Chinese invasion of Taiwan.

“The DF-17 is not for the use on Taiwan-based targets, since the close distance between the island and the mainland makes the bombing mission against Taiwan military targets very easy, and the advanced missiles like DF-17, if being deployed, are meant for targeting the more powerful enemies that try to intervene in the Taiwan question during the PLA's operation.”

The paper goes on to say that Chinese rocket launchers and air-launched missiles can easily reach Taiwan, making it possible to use the hypersonic weapon against major power rivals likely to defend Taiwan, such as the U.S.

“If the PLA deploys missiles like the DF-17, that would be a weapon for striking foreign military force's military bases or fleets in the West Pacific region if those 'foreign forces' dare to intervene in the PLA operation to reunify the island,” the Global Times states, citing a military expert.
