GERMAN WARSHIP HEADS FOR SOUTH CHINA SEA AMID TENSION WITH BEIJING
https://news.mc/2021/08/02/german-warsh ... h-beijing/
BERLIN (Reuters) – Germany on Monday sent a warship to the South China Sea for the first time in almost two decades, joining other Western nations in expanding its military presence in the region amid growing alarm over China’s territorial ambitions.
................
Officials in Berlin have said the German navy will stick to common trade routes. The frigate is not expected to sail through the Taiwan Strait either, another regular U.S. activity condemned by Beijing.
Nevertheless, Berlin has made it clear the mission serves to stress the fact Germany does not accept China’s territorial claims.
Germany is walking a tightrope between its security and economic interests as China has become Berlin’s most important trading partner. German exports there have helped mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Europe’s biggest economy.

China fumes over fresh US-Philippines military pact
https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/letters ... itary-pact
Philippines’ decision to restore military agreement with US has left China fuming. For Manila, the agreement gives it the ability to stand up to any possible aggression from China while for Washington; the agreement means that US will be to maintain a considerable military presence in Philippines.
But for China, it is a big setback as it allows US forces to move in and out of the country. The agreement also paves the way for US to meddle into the South China Sea, leaving China upset.

Taiwan lauds Lithuania for standing up to China
https://focustaiwan.tw/cross-strait/202108100020
Taipei, Aug. 10 (CNA) Taiwan lauded Lithuania for standing up to China on Tuesday after Beijing recalled its ambassador from the country for allowing Taiwan to open a representative office there using the name "Taiwan."
In 72 countries where Taiwan has offices, 57 have no diplomatic relations with Taiwan, Joanne Ou (歐江安), spokeswoman of Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA), said Tuesday.
The purpose of the nation's 110 offices abroad is to strengthen Taiwan's cooperation with host countries in the areas of economics, education, culture and people's welfare, as well as deepening people-to-people exchanges, she said.
"Taiwan's representative office to be set up in Lithuania follows the same goal," Ou said. "We hope to strengthen friendship between the two countries and contribute to peace, stability and prosperity in the international community."
............. Earlier in the day, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that it has decided to recall its ambassador to Lithuania and demanded Lithuania do the same due to the row over the Taiwan office.

US conservatives claim China 'licking chops' at Taiwan after fall of Kabul
https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4270762
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Conservative commentators in the U.S. are suggesting that the fall of the Afghan government following a precipitous retreat of U.S. forces from the country will embolden China to move forward with its plans to conquer Taiwan.
Even before the unconditional withdrawal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan ordered by President Joe Biden is complete, every major city across the country has fallen like dominoes to Taliban guerillas. By Sunday evening (Aug. 15), they were in control of the presidential palace.
The New York Times on Friday (Aug. 13) cited French defense analyst François Heisbourg as asserting that the U.S. abandonment of its ally will have long-term consequences: “the notion that you cannot count on the Americans will strike deeper roots because of Afghanistan.’’ The newspaper said U.S. hesitation toward long-term military commitments "will now be felt all the more strongly among countries in play in the world, like Taiwan, Ukraine, the Philippines and Indonesia, which can only please China and Russia."
.............
Also on Sunday, the Weibo account for the Chinese state-run newspaper the Strait Herald posted a commentary in which it warned Taiwan: "don't trust the United States too much, look at Afghanistan today." The state-operated China Affairs alleged that after the U.S. abandonment of Afghanistan, Taiwanese netizens "believe that the U.S. will abandon Taiwan without hesitation once a war breaks out in the Taiwan Strait."

China hits Lithuania with further sanctions over its ties with Taiwan
https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4275087
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — China is imposing additional sanctions on Lithuania in retaliation for the latter's pursuit of closer relations with Taiwan.
Companies in the agricultural, animal husbandry and timber industries of the Baltic country have complained about trade restrictions from China amid heightened political tensions. The latest obstacles from Beijing include the denial of import permits and accusations of substandard pest management, reported CNA.
The trade woes are believed to stem from Lithuania’s overtures to Taiwan, including allowing it to set up an office in Vilnius using the name "Taiwan," which enraged China. In response, Beijing has recalled its envoy to Lithuania and arbitrarily halted rail freight earlier this month.
The punishments are intended as a warning for others, said Matas Maldeikis, chairman of the Lithuanian Parliamentary Group for Relations with Taiwan.

International Lawmakers Slam New China Threat to Lithuania, Taiwan
https://www.nationalreview.com/corner/i ... ia-taiwan/
Beijing is not happy with Lithuania for deepening its ties with Taiwan, so this summer it initiated an economic bullying campaign to punish the Baltic state, including by halting the export of certain Lithuanian products to China.
But no amount of trade pressure can dissuade Vilnius from aligning itself closer with Taipei now. Something bigger than its trade ties with Beijing is at stake — and it has the support of friends across the West: “We, the Chairs of Foreign Affairs Committees, strongly condemn the political, diplomatic, and economic pressure of People’s Republic of China on Lithuania,” wrote senior parliamentarians from 14 countries in a letter in support of Lithuania.
The group included Senator Bob Menendez, who chairs the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, as well as U.K. MP Tom Tugendhat, and their counterparts from the Czech Republic, European Parliament, France, Germany, and others.
“The interference in the internal affairs of a European Union and NATO state are neither welcome nor appropriate,” they also wrote.
Their defense of Lithuania and Taiwan marks an important new trend: Beijing’s opponents are banding together, making it all the more difficult for the Chinese Communist Party to exert its will on other countries.

US Navy, Coast Guard ships enter Taiwan Strait, irking China: reports
https://www.foxnews.com/world/us-navy-c ... rait-china
The U.S. military operation followed recent Chinese military exercises in the region -- and came at the conclusion of Vice President Kamala Harris' Southeast Asia visit
At least two U.S. vessels entered the Taiwan Strait on Friday, in what Chinese officials described as a "provocative" move, according to reports.
The ships were the Navy's USS Kidd, an Arleigh Burke-class guided missile destroyer, and the Coast Guard cutter Munro, Reuters reported. They traveled "through international waters in accordance with international law, the U.S. Navy said in a statement, according to the news agency.
"The ships’ lawful transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The United States military flies, sails and operates anywhere international law allows," the statement continued.

South China Sea: Pentagon To Ignore Beijing's New Law
https://www.ibtimes.com.au/south-china- ... aw-1749391
The Pentagon has brushed aside a new Chinese law that requires foreign vessels entering its "territorial waters" to report to Beijing, claiming the U.S. Navy operations in the South China Sea won’t be affected by it.
"The United States will continue to fly, sail and operate wherever international law allows," Defence Department spokesperson Lt. Col. Martin Meiners told Stars and Stripes last Wednesday, immediately after Beijing notified the new law.
..............
"Unlawful and sweeping maritime claims, including in the South China Sea, pose a serious threat to the freedom of the seas, including the freedoms of navigation and overflight, free trade and unimpeded lawful commerce, and the rights and interests of the South China Sea and other littoral nations," Supple was quoted by the news outlet.
Beijing claims rights over much of the South China Sea, including the Taiwan Strait and several island chains in the South China Sea. However, these claims are not approved by neighboring countries, including the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Indonesia.
