US shifts defense focus to Taiwan
https://www.taipeitimes.com/News/editor ... 2003834517
An exclusive report by the Washington Post on Saturday last week about a secret internal guidance memo signed by US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth revealed that US defense strategy has officially been reoriented to focus exclusively on deterring the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) potential military invasion of Taiwan, saying it must be prioritized over other potential dangers.
…….
The plan also includes improving the defense of US troop locations, generating pre-positioned weapons stockpiles, improving logistics, and focusing on bombs that can destroy reinforced and subterranean targets.
All of these preparations have only one purpose — to prevent the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) from invading Taiwan at the earliest opportunity, and use strength to nullify Beijing’s strategic fantasies of a “quick victory.”
…….
Washington’s official military documents explicitly designate “deterring China’s actions to seize Taiwan” as an exclusive strategic guiding principle, and the US military’s focus has shifted entirely from Europe and the Middle East to the Taiwan Strait. Despite this, some forces within Taiwan remain skeptical of the US. Some even believe that, at the critical moment, the US would simply sit by and twiddle its thumbs — an assumption that is not only ignorant, but a betrayal of Taiwan’s destiny.
The US has already placed Taiwan’s defense at the core of its national policy — what else is left to question? The only question worth asking is — is Taiwan itself prepared?

US slams China for misusing UN 2758 for 1st time at Security Council
https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/news/6096159
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — For the first time at a UN Security Council session, the US blasted Beijing for misusing UN Resolution 2758 to exclude Taiwan from the international body.
Wu Ting (吳婷), the US mission’s deputy political counselor, on April 23 criticized a UN meeting on Unilateralism and Bullying Practices on International Relations as a performative maneuver, per CNA. Wu said the world should focus on China’s actions, "rather than its empty claims,” when assessing its contributions to the global system.
Wu said in Mandarin, “China’s actions do not match its words. China says one thing and does another.”
She said China has engaged in unilateral and unfair trade practices, harming the US and global markets. Wu said China uses state subsidies and other non-market mechanisms to generate industrial overcapacity.
Wu also accused Beijing of manipulating international financial institutions by securing loans and re-lending them to enhance its image, while profiting through lucrative development contracts. She said China simultaneously claims to be a developing country while it “weaponizes” its donor status and development programs to bully other nations.

Map Shows Reach of US Missiles on China’s Doorstep
By Micah McCartney Newsweek World
Updated April 29, 2025 3:46 PM
The U.S. military has deployed a high-precision anti-ship missile launcher to a far-north Philippine province near Taiwan as part of the two allies' largest annual series of military drills, the Balikatan exercise. China's Foreign Ministry lodged "serious representations" with Manila's ambassador to the country, Jimmy FlorCruz, on Monday over what it described as recent negative developments in Taiwan-related and security fields by the Philippine side.

Map Shows US Missile Range Near China. This map shows the ranges of the Naval Strike Missile (orange), the Standard Missile-6 (pink), and the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (red) from missile systems deployed in the Philippines. Newsweek
What To Know
The Typhon system was sent to a northwestern coastal area facing Scarborough Shoal in January, according to a Philippine official cited by The Associated Press in a Sunday report. That would put much of southeastern China's seaboard within reach of the Typhon's Tomahawk missiles, which have a range of roughly 1,000 miles. The MRC can also be equipped with Standard Missile-6 interceptors capable of striking targets up to 290 miles away.

Czech Senate condemns China's use of UN Resolution 2758 to claim Taiwan
https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/news/6098470
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — The Czech Senate passed a resolution opposing China’s misinterpretation of UN Resolution 2758 and backed Taiwan’s global participation on Tuesday.
The senate pointed out that UN Resolution 2758 makes no mention of Taiwan or Taiwanese and does not address Taiwan's political status or determine China's sovereignty over Taiwan, according to Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It also does not specify Taiwan’s position or participation in UN agencies, the senate said.
The senate criticized China for deliberately distorting the resolution, which undermines the legitimacy of the UN and the fundamental principles of international law.
