Relationen mellan Kina och Japan har blivit allt mer spänd på senare tid. Under gårdagen trappades oroligheterna upp ännu ett snäpp, då Japans försvarsministerium meddelade att kinesiskt militärflyg för första gången någonsin inkräktade på japanskt luftrum.

Det var ett spaningsflygplan av modell Y-9 som tog sig in i Japans luftrum vid ögruppen Danjo, just sydväst om ön Kyushu i prefekturen Nagasaki. Två stycken japanska stridsflygplan skickades upp för att möta det kinesiska planet, som lämnade området efter två minuter.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called this week for troops to strengthen their preparedness for war, state media reported on Saturday, just days after Beijing staged large-scale military drills around Taiwan.

Xi made his comments while visiting a brigade of the People’s Liberation Army Rocket Force on Thursday, according to state-run broadcaster CCTV.

Xi said the military should “comprehensively strengthen training and preparation for war, (and) ensure troops have solid combat capabilities”, CCTV reported.


Soldiers must “enhance their strategic deterrent and combat capability,” Xi said.

US, Canadian navy ships sail through Taiwan Strait week after China war games

A U.S. and a Canadian warship sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait together Sunday less than a week after China conducted a new round of war games around the island, with Beijing denouncing the mission as "disruptive."

The U.S. Navy, occasionally accompanied by ships from allied countries, transits the strait around once a month. China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory, also says the strategic waterway belongs to it.

The U.S. Navy's 7th Fleet said Monday that the destroyer USS Higgins and the Canadian frigate HMCS Vancouver made a "routine" transit Sunday "through waters where high-seas freedom of navigation and overflight apply in accordance with international law."

The transit demonstrated the United States' and Canada's commitment to upholding freedom of navigation for all countries, it said in a statement.

The international community's navigational rights and freedoms in the Taiwan Strait should not be limited. The United States rejects any assertion of sovereignty or jurisdiction that is inconsistent with freedoms of navigations, overflight, and other lawful uses of the sea and air," it said.

China's Eastern Theater Command said its forces monitored and warned the ships.

"The actions of the United States and Canada caused trouble and are disruptive to peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait," it added.

China staged war-games last Monday it said were a warning to "separatist acts" and which drew condemnation from the Taiwanese and U.S. governments.

News broke on Friday that the US approved a US$1.98 billion arms sale, including surface-to-air missiles and radar systems, to Taiwan, marking the 17th and biggest under the Biden Administration. China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday said US weapon sales to Taiwan “seriously violate” the “one-China” principle and the three China-US joint communiques.

The ministry said such sales undermine Beijing's sovereignty and security interests, harm China-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and “send a gravely wrong message to ‘Taiwan independence’ separatist forces.” Beijing said it “strongly condemns and firmly opposes this,” and claimed it lodged “serious protests” with Washington.

It’s not a fait accompli, as Western analysts publicly suggest, that the Chinese will fail in their bid to annex Taiwan.

China continues its massive preparations for an attack on Taiwan, possibly as soon as this spring
Reports over the last month have shown that “at least five new special purpose barges which appear tailor made for amphibious assault” are being constructed at the Guangzhou Shipyards—alongside an advanced Chinese submarine, which many experts believe to be a prototype for an Ultra-Large Unmanned Undersea Vehicle, or ULUUV—according to H.I. Sutton of Naval News.

The barges have odd features, such as “unusually long road bridges extending from their bows.” Sutton assesses that the “configuration makes them particularly relevant to any future landing of [Chinese] forces” on Taiwan. These barges appear to have unique stabilization features designed to ensure safe offloading of equipment and personnel, even in inclement weather. In other words, it allows for Chinese war planners to have a better chance of successful amphibious landings, even in the notoriously difficult weather of the Taiwan Strait.

Don’t Assume China Can’t Hit Taiwan at Any Time
There is a disturbing myth that has taken root in the minds of some Western and Taiwanese defense analysts about the ability of China to invade Taiwan. According to this theory, even though China’s military capabilities have increased exponentially over the last decade, Beijing can only attempt an attack on Taiwan in certain parts of the year, because of the unpleasant weather of the Taiwan Strait. The months of April and October tend to be the most fortuitous times for an attempted invasion of the island, since the Strait is usually calm there. Therefore, Taiwan should be vigilant during these months, but can loosen up during the rest of the year.

US lawmakers back ending ‘one China’

TAIWAN ADVOCATES: The resolution, which called for the recognition of Taiwan as a country and normalized relations, was supported by 22 Republican representatives

Two US representatives on Thursday reintroduced a resolution calling for the US to end its “one China” policy, resume formal diplomatic ties with Taiwan and negotiate a bilateral Taiwan-US free trade agreement.

Republican US representatives Tom Tiffany of Wisconsin’s 7th Congressional District and Scott Perry of Pennsylvania’s 10th District were backed by 22 Republican members of the US House of Representatives.

The two congressmen first introduced the resolution together in 2021.

The resolution called on US President Donald Trump to “abandon the antiquated ‘one China’ policy in favor of a policy that recognizes the objective reality that Taiwan is an independent country, not governed by or included within the territory of the People’s Republic of China.”

Trump should also recognize the legitimacy of Taiwan’s democratically elected national government, appoint an official US ambassador to the nation and accept a Taiwanese counterpart in the US, it says.

The resolution also called on the US representative to the UN and other officials to advocate for Taiwan’s membership in the UN and other international bodies of which the US is a member.

The resolution went on to commend Taiwan for its “commitment to democracy, civil liberties and human rights.” It also referenced several former US presidents, including Jimmy Carter, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton.

Taiwan and the US had maintained normal diplomatic relations until “president Carter abruptly abandoned both without the approval of Congress in 1979” and that despite Reagan strengthening ties, “The United States has not altered its position regarding sovereignty over Taiwan,” the resolution says.

Clinton was also quoted in the resolution as having previously declared “that the issues between Beijing and Taiwan must be resolved peacefully and with the assent of the people of Taiwan.”

Both Republican lawmakers have a history of calling for stronger ties with Taiwan. The pair in 2021 recommended that the US support Taiwan’s bid for UN membership.

The US government switched diplomatic recognition from Taipei to Beijing in 1979 and has since maintained only unofficial diplomatic relations with Taiwan, as defined by the Taiwan Relations Act.

According to the bill, the “one China” policy is obsolete, does not serve the people of Taiwan or the US and fails to reflect the reality that Taiwan has been a sovereign and independent country for more than 70 years.

If the bill passes the House and the Senate, it would only be a “sense of Congress” resolution. It would not require the US president’s approval and would not have the full force of law.
