Chiu denies that Taiwan would suffer 240,000 casualties in 1st wave of China invasion

https://www.taiwannews.com.tw/en/news/4332657

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — Defense Minister Chiu Kuo-cheng (邱國正) on Tuesday (Nov. 2) refuted an alleged report that Taiwan could suffer 240,000 casualties in the first wave of an invasion by China.

On Monday (Nov. 1), local media outlets republished a military evaluation report supposedly leaked in 2005 allegedly estimating that when the People's Liberation Army begins its assault on Taiwan, the latter will lose at least 40,000 troops in battle within the first seven days.

Due to Taiwan's small size, dense population, and the proximity of important political, economic, and military institutions to urban areas, civilian deaths would likely be three to five times higher, the report concluded. This could mean up to 200,000 civilian casualties for a total casualty count of 240,000.

When asked by the media to comment on the alleged casualty figures as he prepared to enter a session of the Legislative Yuan, Chiu said, "This is a big problem." He denied that there has been an assessment of casualties that would result from the first wave of an attack.

Hur kommer Europa agera om Kina attackerar Taiwan?

https://kinamedia.se/2021/11/03/hur-kom ... ar-taiwan/

By Jojje Olsson, kinamedia.se

Denna text publicerades först 28 oktober på engelska i The Diplomat under rubriken ”If China Attacks Taiwan, What Will Europe Do?”, och är översatt till svenska i överenskommelse med The Diplomat.

China moves to quash online rumours that Taiwan war is looming

https://www.straitstimes.com/asia/east- ... is-looming

BEIJING (BLOOMBERG) - Chinese state media have sought to quiet online speculation that a conflict with Taiwan may be imminent, in a sign of how heated rhetoric between Washington and Beijing was feeding public concern about the risk of war.

Chinese social media networks have seen a flurry of chatter about a possible Taiwan crisis in recent days, seemingly fuelled by Beijing's call for citizens to stockpile food and an unrelated message claiming to show the nation was preparing to mobilise military reserves.

The surge came after a report by China's state broadcaster saying that Taiwanese were hoarding their own survival supplies.
.............
On Wednesday morning, the Junzhengping denial was among the top-trending topics on the Weibo social media network. Still, the war talk continued to simmer, with a 63-year-old video of PLA generals singing that they "will definitely plant the flag of victory on Taiwan" getting more than 130 million views.

The controversy shows the challenge President Xi Jinping's government faces in trying to manage Chinese public sentiment over Taiwan, even with its vast censorship powers. Over months of sabre-rattling over Taiwan, authorities have sometimes needed to step in to tone down the rhetoric and at other times faced backlash for perceived weakness.

USS Connecticut CO, XO, COB Relieved Over Collision in South China Sea ‘Due to Loss of Confidence’

https://news.usni.org/2021/11/04/uss-co ... confidence

The commander, executive officer and senior enlisted sailor for attack submarine USS Connecticut (SSN-22) have been fired following the results of an investigation into the Oct. 2 underwater collision in the South China Sea, the Navy announced on Thursday.

Connecticut commanding officer Cmdr. Cameron Aljilani, executive officer Lt. Cmdr. Patrick Cashin and Chief of the Boat Cory Rodgers were removed from their positions at the direction of U.S. 7th Fleet commander Vice Adm. Karl Thomas.

The reliefs are “due to loss of confidence. Thomas determined sound judgement, prudent decision-making, and adherence to required procedures in navigation planning, watch team execution and risk management could have prevented the incident,” reads a statement from the Navy.
“Capt. John Witte will assume duties as interim Commanding Officer. Cmdr. Joe Sammur will assume duties as interim Executive Officer. Command Master Chief Paul Walters will assume duties as interim Chief of the Boat.”

The reliefs follow the completion of the investigation into the Oct. 2 collision in which the nuclear attack submarine collided with an uncharted underwater seamount in the South China Sea.

“The investigation determined USS Connecticut grounded on an uncharted seamount while operating in international waters in the Indo-Pacific region,” 7th Fleet spokesperson Cmdr. Hayley Sims told USNI News in a Monday afternoon statement.

You’re on a hit list: China threatens Taiwan ‘separatists’

https://eturbonews.com/3007815/youre-on ... paratists/

A spokeswoman for China’s Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, responding to a media query regarding the punitive measures against supporters of Taiwan independence, announced that such ‘separatist elements’ are on China’s hit list and will be ‘punished’ in ‘accordance with the law.’

A Chinese government representative, Zhu Fenglian, sent out a stern public threat to Taiwan independence proponents, warning that those on the hit list, together with their relatives, shall not enter the mainland and the two special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macao, and their affiliated institutions shall be restricted from forging any cooperation with organizations and individuals on the mainland.

Zhu also added that their sponsors and related enterprises shall be banned from engaging in profit-making activities on the mainland, among other punishments.
“Those who betray their motherland and seek to split the country are destined to have a bad end, and are bound to be spurned by the people and judged by history,” Zhu said, referring to proponents of Taiwan‘s independence, including Taiwan’s premier Su Tseng-chang, president of the Legislative Yuan Yu Shyi-Kun and Taiwan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Wu.

Those on that hit list will be held to lifelong accountability and will be investigated for criminal liability in accordance with the Communist China ‘law,’ Zhu added.

China State Media: 'Military Showdown Will Come' if Taiwan, U.S. Don't Change Course

https://www.newsweek.com/china-state-me ... ?piano_t=1

As tensions persist between the U.S. and China over the future of Taiwan, Chinese state media has warned a "military showdown will come" and described the possible scenario as "a life-and-death struggle" between the nations.

The Global Times, which is published by the ruling Chinese Communist Party, shared the opinion article on Friday after U.S. military officials have increasingly warned about China's threat to Taiwan's autonomy. The editorial highlighted remarks from U.S. Secretary of the Navy Carlos Del Toro, who expressed concern this past week about the "rapid expansion" of China's navy.

Taiwan, an island nation, is claimed by China under its "one country, two systems" constitutional principle. However, the democratically-run East Asian country has operated with autonomy and the support of the U.S. for decades. In recent years, analysts have increasingly warned that Beijing could move militarily to take control of the island by force.

"We need to make the US aware that no matter what threats it poses or forces it uses, China's reunification will eventually happen. Setting stumbling blocks to reunification across the Straits would mean a fundamental confrontation," The Global Times editorial cautioned.

Is China about to invade Taiwan?
For the time being, China’s strategy seems to be to break Taiwan’s will to fight, rather than outright conquest

This week, the central committee of the Chinese Communist Party will issue a “resolution on history.” It will enshrine the official historical narrative of the Xi Jinping era. Only two CCP leaders have issued a resolution of this kind before: Mao Zedong and Deng Xiaoping. Mao’s resolution set out his role as China’s sole leader; Deng’s, the conditions for the country’s economic focus. And Xi’s? Details are yet to be revealed, but it is expected to reinforce the idea of China’s historical destiny, what Xi calls the “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.” For Xi, the project of national rejuvenation is inherently linked to the reunification with Taiwan, the only part of the old republic that did not become communist in 1949. Xi has called reunification the “unswerving historical task” of the party, and he takes it very seriously. The resolution’s aim is not to celebrate the CCP’s past. It is to stress the inevitability of the future.

Kina antar ny historieresolution som garanterar Xi Jinpings fortsatta ledarskap

https://kinamedia.se/2021/11/12/kina-an ... i-jinping/

............

China claims Biden denounced 'Taiwan independence,' but warns US is 'playing with fire'

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/china- ... aying-fire

China claimed Tuesday that President Biden denounced Taiwanese independence from the communist nation, but warned the U.S. is "playing with fire" in the South China Sea.

The new round of threats arose following an hours-long virtual summit between Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping that marked the most extensive talks the world leaders have engaged in since Biden took office.

In a read-out following the talks, Chinese officials said Biden reiterated U.S. support for the one-China policy and claimed the U.S. president "does not support ‘Taiwan independence’."
............
China made it clear Tuesday that it has every intention of bringing the island under "complete reunification" with mainland China and threatened action if forces attempt to stop this.

"Should the separatist forces for ‘Taiwan independence’ provoke us, force our hands or even cross the red line, we will be compelled to take resolute measures," the readout said. "On this question bearing on China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, there is no room for compromise."
